Even my dad can use Linux!!!

My dad is absolutely useless when it comes to computers. Only thing he ever learned to do with computers is to start it, open Solitaire game and after having enough of playing, he knew how to shut computer down properly. That was in Windows.

About half a year ago I installed Ubuntu on that old computer that he has at home. Showed him how to start computer (I used autologin to make it easier for him). Then how to start Solitaire game, and then how to shut computer down. Soooo easy tasks to do for everyone and my dad learned that easily as well.

Today I god phone call from him. His top panel dissapeared and he couldn't do anything, nor start the game, nor shutdown the computer. He tried few times (before calling me) to reset computer, but with same result.

I know how angry he can start to be if things don't work the way he wants them to work, so I patiently started to explain and do step by step support, how to add new panel, and how to add new things to panel (Menu bar and Session indicator bar). While doing that I found out my dad doesn't even know what right/left click on mouse is (neither what it can be for). Either way, he managed with me explaining to him, to put things back on panel, even to move them to the right and left and to lock them on the panel. So he could finaly have nice relaxing evening while playing cards on computer.

And what's the moral of this story?

Don't let anyone tell me that Linux is hard and windows is definitelly better. My dad doesn't know how to use computer. But still was able to repair broken settings in GNOME. Linux is for geeks you say? Well, then my dad is definitely a geek. Solitaire geek. But definitely on Linux!!! And he's very happy with that. :)
